DUERO RIVER VALLEY

Located in north-central Spain, the Duero River Valley is the beating heart of the country's premium winemaking. Flowing from high mountain peaks all the way to the Atlantic coast, the River Duero breathes life into the surrounding vineyards. Its most famous stretch is Ribera del Duero (literally translating to "banks of the Duero"), a spectacular region anchored by some of Spain's most legendary and sought-after estates.

The secret to the spectacular Spanish wines produced here lies in the dramatic landscape. Despite the gentle rolling hills, these vineyards sit at incredibly high altitudes. The brilliant sunshine of the hot Spanish days perfectly ripens the grapes, while the freezing nights ensure they retain a wonderful, mouth-watering freshness. This extreme climate is absolutely perfect for the native Tempranillo grape. In Ribera del Duero and the neighbouring Toro region, Tempranillo produces red wines that are rich, powerful, and deeply intense. They are the ultimate companion for a weekend barbecue or a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb.

While the valley is celebrated for its monumental reds, it is also home to some of Spain's most exciting white wines. Just across the river, the Rueda region has claimed the international spotlight with its brilliant Verdejo grape. These white wines offer a fantastic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with crisp citrus aromas and a lovely, textured pear finish. The valley's phenomenal success has also shone a light on emerging neighbouring areas like Cigales, which is shedding its history of purely rosé production to craft some seriously impressive, fruit-forward reds.
