Amalaya Calchaquí Valley Malbec 2025
Bodega Amalaya Malbec is a wonderfully vibrant and highly expressive Argentinian red wine crafted in the breathtakingly beautiful Calchaquí Valley. Set within the northern region of Salta, this pioneering estate boasts some of the highest vineyards in the world, with vines planted at a staggering altitude of almost two thousand metres above sea level. This extreme, sun-drenched landscape forces the roots to dig deep into the rocky soils, while the dramatic drop in night time temperatures allows the grapes to retain incredibly fresh natural acidity. It is this unique environment that gives the wine its intense energy and unmistakable character. While it is primarily driven by the country's famous Malbec grape, the winemaking team traditionally blends in a small splash of Tannat and Petit Verdot to add an extra layer of dark fruit and structural depth. To keep the focus entirely on the bright, natural flavours of the vineyard, a large portion of the wine is aged in stainless steel rather than heavy oak barrels. In the glass, it pours a deep, striking ruby red and opens with a highly inviting perfume of wild violet, dark cherry, and a touch of white pepper. Every sip is incredibly smooth and deeply satisfying, delivering generous waves of rich plum and fresh red berry, all held together by very soft tannins and a warming, subtly spiced finish. Because it is so wonderfully rich yet remarkably fresh, this is a brilliant everyday bottle to open for a relaxed weekend dinner or a casual evening with friends. It is an absolutely classic partner for comforting, flavour packed food. Pour a generous glass alongside a sizzling grilled steak, a hearty slow cooked beef chilli, or a vibrant tray of roasted root vegetables and spicy sausages.
