The Douro Valley, stretching inland from the historic city of Porto, is arguably Portugal's most famous and breathtaking wine region. The landscape is instantly recognisable: incredibly steep, winding hillsides covered in ancient, terraced vineyards that plunge down to the mighty Douro River. The hot, dry climate and tough slate soils mean the vines have to work incredibly hard, producing grapes that are packed with intense, concentrated flavour.

For centuries, this dramatic region was exclusively known as the birthplace of Port. Crafted from local grapes like Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, these famous fortified wines offer rich, warming flavours of dark fruit and sweet spice, making them the ultimate after-dinner treat.

However, over the last few decades, the Douro has experienced a brilliant revolution. Winemakers began using those exact same premium grapes to create incredible unfortified red wines. Today, Douro reds are celebrated worldwide for being full-bodied, complex, and incredibly satisfying, offering powerful flavours of blackberry and plum without the sweetness of Port. Whether you are looking for a classic Ruby Port to pair with cheese or a robust, structured red for a special dinner, the Douro Valley delivers some of the very best wines Portugal has to offer.
