The Bodegas Ondarre Graciano from La Rioja offers a fascinating opportunity to taste a genuine viticultural rarity. Notoriously difficult to cultivate, the native Graciano grape is typically used only in tiny amounts as a hidden blending partner to add colour and perfume to classic regional styles. By allowing this challenging grape to shine entirely on its own, the winemaking team has crafted a spectacular, conversation-starting Rioja red wine. Following 16 months of maturation in a mix of French and American oak, the wine takes on a deeply concentrated appearance and a beautifully integrated structure. The palate is driven by rich blackberry and dark plum, layered with subtle dark chocolate and a hint of cracked black pepper from the oak influence. Guided by a naturally fresh acidity rather than heavy, drying tannins, it maintains a refined, lively finish that pairs exceptionally well with slow-roasted lamb, braised beef, or mature hard cheeses.
