Masi 'Toar' Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2022
Masi Toar Valpolicella Classico Superiore comes from the historic hillsides of the Valpolicella Classico zone in northern Italy. While many traditional reds from this famous region are light and breezy, this specific bottling offers a much deeper, more concentrated experience. The name itself comes from a local dialect word referring to the volcanic, dark clay soils where the grapes are grown. This unique volcanic earth forces the vines to work harder, infusing the liquid with an incredible depth of flavour and a robust structure. The wine pours a deep ruby-red colour with brilliant violet reflections. It opens with intense, inviting aromas of ripe dark cherries, wild plums, and a delicate hint of warm baking spices. On the palate, the velvety texture is completely smooth, full-bodied, and satisfying. The juicy dark fruit profiles are beautifully balanced by a refreshing twist of acidity and fine, integrated tannins that coat the mouth and lead into a long, warming finish. Crafting this unique Masi expression relies on combining the traditional Corvina grape with Oseleta, an ancient, local variety that was almost lost to history before being rescued and replanted by the estate. This combination gives the wine its deep colour and firm body, making it an excellent match for hearty, everyday meals. It pairs beautifully with a rich beef stew, a classic Sunday roast, or a simple plate of mature cheeses on a weekend evening.
