The global reputation of Dr Loosen is entirely tied to the energy of Ernst "Erni" Loosen, who took over his family's historic 200-year-old estate in 1988. Originally trained as an archaeologist, Erni approached the steep slate cliffs of Germany’s Middle Mosel with a unique perspective, immediately halting modern industrial practices to focus strictly on the region’s natural heritage. He famously slashed vineyard yields, stopped the use of chemical fertilisers, and turned his back on high-tech cellar manipulation. His core winemaking philosophy relies on letting the distinct soil identity triumph over technology, reviving ancient cellar traditions like slow spontaneous fermentations and extended maturation on the full lees inside traditional, neutral three-thousand-litre oak Fuder barrels.
This rigorous estate standard is anchored in a spectacular line-up of south-facing Grand Cru vineyards, including legendary sites like the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Ürziger Würzgarten. Because the phylloxera beetle cannot survive in the region's pure, rocky slate soils, these vertiginous cliffs are home to a rare treasure trove of ancient, century-old un-grafted Riesling vines. These original-rooted survivors produce tiny, highly concentrated crops that inject a profound mineral depth, vibrant acidity, and structural longevity into the liquid. It is this unique combination of ancient wood aging and razor-sharp slate terroir that allows the premium estate bottles to age beautifully for decades in the cellar.
To ensure his beloved Mosel styles remain accessible for casual drinking, Erni and his brother Thomas also run the highly successful Dr L Riesling negociant range. Working in close partnership with a trusted network of contracted independent growers across the valley, the fruit is harvested and brought back to the main estate cellars to be vinified by the exact same expert winemaking team. This creates a brilliant, dual-track collection: providing fruit-forward, crisp, and beautifully balanced house pours for reliable weekday drinking, alongside a stunning ladder of dry, single-vineyard estate blockbusters for serious collectors.
