Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2025
Dr Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is a concentrated, medium-sweet white wine sourced from the estate's most famous grand cru vineyard. The name translates literally as the sundial of Wehlen, referencing the massive stone sundial erected directly in the middle of the cliff face in 1842 by Jodokus Prüm to help workers across the river keep time. This near-vertical precipice is composed of pure, stony blue slate that catches unobstructed, intense sunlight throughout the day. By delaying the harvest, the grapes achieve optimum maturity, which is carefully vinified using indigenous yeasts in traditional, neutral oak casks to preserve the pure expression of the vineyard. The wine displays deep, expressive aromas of ripe peach, apricot, and honey, tightly wound around a core of stony minerality and delicate floral notes. On the palate, it delivers a dense, unctuous layer of tropical and orchard fruit that feels remarkably weightless, thanks to a piercing, vibrant current of acidity that cuts through the natural sweetness and extends into a long, beautifully balanced finish. While its exceptional concentration and structural balance mean it will evolve magnificently in the cellar for decades, it is a brilliant bottle to enjoy now. Its unctuous profile makes it the ultimate pairing for savoury dishes such as slow-roasted pork belly, smooth duck liver terrines, or mature, salty blue cheeses.
