Heidi Schröck & Söhne Furmint 2024
Crafted in the historic lakeside village of Rust within Austria’s Burgenland region, Heidi Schröck & Söhne Furmint is a striking, deeply expressive white wine. While Furmint is famously recognized across the nearby Hungarian border, pioneering winemaker Heidi Schröck has spearheaded its glorious revival on Austrian soil. Grown in a sun-drenched semi-amphitheatre near Lake Neusiedl, the vines thrive in unique "Rust gravel" soils composed of crystalline rock, quartz, and schist, giving the fruit an incredible natural clarity, tension, and a distinct mineral backbone. The winemaking philosophy highlights texture and varietal purity. Hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed, with the majority fermented in stainless steel to protect the bright, lively acidity, while a portion is meticulously aged in large neutral acacia wooden casks on its fine lees. The result is a luminous golden-yellow pour that opens with intense aromas of ripe yellow pear, orchard blossom, chamomile, and a hint of fresh hay. On the palate, it delivers a bone-dry, beautifully bundled energy that balances a rich, slightly smoky fleshiness with a saline, mouthwatering finish. This characterful white makes for an exceptional dinner companion. Its superb texture and vibrant crispness make it a wonderful pairing for slow-roasted pork belly, grilled white fish, or creamy woodland mushroom risottos. It is an adventurous, deeply rewarding bottle that offers a captivating alternative for anyone looking to step out of their usual white wine comfort zone.
