Cuilleron Côte Rôtie Bonnivières 2024
Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Bonnivières is a magnificent, powerhouse French red wine crafted by one of the true masters of the Northern Rhône. The grapes for this bottle are grown entirely within Bonnivières, a highly prized single vineyard - known locally as a lieu-dit - perched on the impossibly steep, sun-baked terraces that give the region its name. Working with pure Syrah vines rooted deeply into crumbly, mineral-rich soils, Yves Cuilleron captures the raw energy of this specific hillside plot to create a wine of incredible depth, concentration, and elegance. In the cellar, the grapes are fermented gently before resting in French oak barrels for eighteen months. This long, patient maturation softens the natural power of the wine and weaves in a beautiful layer of warm toasted spice without overpowering the pure fruit. In the glass, it opens with an intoxicating perfume of dark blackberry, wild violet, and a signature crackle of black pepper. Every sip is rich and deeply savoury, offering layers of dark plum, smoked meat, and earthy spices, all held together by smooth, velvety tannins that lead to a remarkably long finish. While this is a serious wine built to age gracefully in the cellar, it is utterly spectacular to open now for a grand weekend dinner. Decant the bottle for an hour before pouring to allow those rich, smoky aromas to fully expand. It demands a hearty, flavour-packed dish at the table - pair it with a classic roast beef joint, thick-cut venison steaks, or a rich wild mushroom wellington.
