Monopole Clásico Rioja Blanco Seco 2021
C.V.N.E. Monopole Clásico holds the title of Spain’s oldest white wine brand, with a rich heritage stretching back to 1915. Sourced from the Villalba de Rioja vineyard in the Rioja Alta region, this historic Spanish white wine is crafted primarily from hand harvested Viura grapes. To maintain its traditional style, the fruit is softly pressed and initially settled in concrete tanks, just as it was in the 1970s. Following fermentation in stainless steel, the liquid matures for eight months on its lees in older, large oak barrels. What truly sets this wine apart is a highly unusual historical technique: the addition of a small amount of Manzanilla sherry. This introduces the unique, savoury character of biological ageing under a veil of flor. Pouring a bright straw yellow, the nose reveals an intricate mix of fresh pear, apple, white currant and delicate floral aromas, backed by deeper hints of dried fruit and spice. On the palate, a brilliant streak of salinity and elegant acidity provide a remarkably fresh and vibrant finish.
