OIlifantsberg Soul of the Mountain The Matriarch 2023

The Olifantsberg Soul of the Mountain The Matriarch is an exceptional South African white blend that acts as a true reflection of the rugged environment it calls home. Crafted by the talented Elizma Visser, the grapes for this release are sourced from seven distinct sites sitting between 300 and 470 metres above sea level on the windy slopes of the Breedekloof Valley. Here, the vines grow directly in ancient shale and sandstone soils. These harsh conditions naturally limit the amount of fruit the vines produce, resulting in small yields of deeply flavourful Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Chenin Blanc. To preserve the natural freshness of the grapes, the harvest is gathered carefully, and each grape variety is left to mature separately for nine months in oak barrels. After this patient resting period, the distinct parcels are finally brought together to form the finished blend. This hands-off approach allows the wine to develop a wonderfully creamy, multi-layered texture without ever losing its bright, energetic character. In the glass, this is incredibly inviting and sure to appeal to anyone who enjoys a classic Rhône-style white. You will find aromatic notes of sweet citrus peel, delicate white blossoms, and a subtle, savoury spice. It feels round and generous on the palate, yet finishes with a beautifully crisp, mouth-watering tang that makes it incredibly refreshing. It is a brilliant bottle to pour alongside young goats' cheese, roasted poultry, or simply to enjoy as a lively, characterful evening drink.
